The Board of Directors each year make proposals to the Membership for Special Events for the purpose of raising funds to accomplish the work of the club through the Four Avenues of Service. The two main projects for Rotary Yead 2008-2009 have been approved by the BOD and the Membership are as follows:
1. The Renovation of HAP SIMPSON PARK, in partnership with the City of Brevard. This facility, located on Highway 276 (Greenville Highway) just south of the Brevard Elementary School, has been in major disrepair for many years, due to flooding of the area when the adjacent river overflows. The general condition of this area is in need of upgrade, with better picnic tables, Play Ground area for kids, a Dog Park, and access for canoes & kyacks to the river. There is no estimate by the city as to the cost of the improvements, but they, the city, has applied for a matching grant from the state to help fund the project. The city has agreed that the park's name may be changed to one that will use the Rotary Logo. The name, for example, could be ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PARK, Sponsored By the Rotary Club of Brevard.
2. The second project that the club is engaged in is the GIFT OF LIFE PROGRAM. This program was brought to the club by Florence Allbaugh, who trasferred to our club from the Hilton Head Rotary Club, Hilton Head, S.C. This was a very successful project for the Hilton Head Club, which sought children from all over the world in serious need of surgery and/or other medical reasons. Due to Florence's spearheading this project for the club, with much tireless work on her part, the first child will soon arrive from the Philippines for reconstruction surgery for very serious burns. At this writing the Philippine Airlines will be donating her flight at no cost to bring Suzanne to the U.S. Joe Castro will be contacting the Manila Rotary Club, where he was a former member, to help with incidental cost. Florence has arranged for all medical expenses incurred from Suzanne's restoration to be donated by members of the Hendersonville medical community and facilities.More informnation on this will be forecoming. At the recent board meetin of the club, $1,000 was approved to meet incidental expenses incurred upon Suzanne's arrival.
