The John Scarlet Memorial Foundation, Inc. DBA
The Brevard Rotary Foundation, Inc.
was started in memory of John Scarlett, longtime member of the club, who died in 1999 at the age of 95. John was truly a Rotarians Rotarian! He was active in the club almost up to the day of his death.
The Foundation is a 501(c)3 Tax Exempt Corporation in the State of North Carolina. It is in Partnership with the Brevard Rotary Club (BRC) to provide the Outreach Support for Scholarships and Community Projects as directed by the Club.
The Mission of the Foundation is to raise funds in an amount that these scholarships and community projects may be funded by the interest earned from the principal. The goal is for the corpus to reach $100,000. This goal is to be funded through a Sustaining Membership program by members of the BRC as well as donations from businesses and individuals in and out of the Transylvania County Community. In the meantime, funds raised by the BRC each year to support their annual budgeted commitments to scholarships and community projects will be directed through the Foundation, less a reserve fund as set by the BRC Board of Directors, to fund these projects. This enables all contributions for all community outreach to be fully tax deductible.
In essence, the role of the Foundation is "To promote the charitable goals and objectives of the BRC and Rotary International, Inc., to include award and funding of educational scholarships, and/or other worthwhile community projects as the directors of the corporation may deem necessary".
John Scarlett was one of the most dedicated members of the BRC. He moved to the Brevard area from Erie, PA, in 1972 with his wife Eunice. John spent 41 years with General Electric in Erie, beginning as a foreman and working his way up to community program manager. After retirement in 1967, he and his wife traveled around the world. After visiting Brevard, they decided to retire here permanently. He served Rotary in many posts, including Elder Statesman.
The BRC, through this Foundation, wishes to continue John’s devotion to Rotary and to the community he loved so much. John died on August 12th, 1999, at the age of 95. We salute John as a shining example of Rotary’s motto:
